Fmoc-Phe(4-NO2)-OH is uilized to prepare peptides for kinetics studies and SAR studies.  The Phe(4-NO2) residue can be used as a chromogenic label as in a substrate used to develop an [Ile40]HTLV-1 protease inhibition assay (HO Kumada, et al., J. Pept. Sci., 2011, 17, 569-75).  It has also be utilized with pyrenylalanine in FRET studies (H Poras, et al., Appl. Environ. Microbiol., 2009, 75, 4382-90; N Luciani, et al., Biochem. J., 2001, 356(Pt 3), 813-9).  Phe(4-NO2) has also been paired with Trp in FRET studies (ML Tsao, et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 4572-3).  More recently, Phe(4-NO2) has been used as an infrared absorption probe (C Peggion, et al., J. Pept. Sci., 2013, 19, 246-56; EE Smith, et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2011, 115, 2380-5).
