Fmoc-Phe(4-CN)-OH is utilized to incorporate 4-cyanophenylalanine into peptides by Fmoc protocols.  Phe(4-CN) residues are quite useful in structural studies.  It may be utilized as an infrared probe (AT Fafarman, SG Boxer, J. Phys. Chem. B, 2010, 114, 13536-44) or as a fluorescent probe (D Du, H Liu, B Ojha, Methods Mol. Biol., 2013, 1081, 77-89).  Phe(4-CN) can form FRET pairs with Trp and 7-AzaTrp (AL Serrano, O Bilsel, F Gai, J. Phys. Chem. B, 2012, 116, 10631-8; UM Rogers, LG Lippert, F Gai, Anal. Biochem., 2010, 399, 182-9).  These techniques have been used to probe alpha-helix formation (H Taskent-Sezgin, Biochemistry, 2010, 49, 6290-5) and to study fibril growth during amyloid formation (P. Marek, et al., J. Mol. Biol., 2010, 400, 878-88).
