Substituted phenyalanines are valuble building blocks in drug discovery, drug development, and studying the interaction of peptides with receptors.  The aromatic ring of phenylalanine can be monosubstituted in the ortho, meta or para postions, also known as the 2, 3 and 4 positions respectively.   Different groups attached to the ring of substituted phenylalanines alter the electron density of the aromatic ring and may modify how a peptide interacts with a receptor.
