Signal Peptides

Cosmetic peptides typically can be classified into four catagories: signal peptides, carrier peptides, neurotransmitter inhibitors and enzyme inhibitors.  Signal peptides stimulate skin fibroblasts to produce more structural proteins, including elastin and collagen.  Since aged skin has reduced levels of collagen and elastin, signal peptides helps the skin to look firmer and fuller.  

Carrier Peptides

Carrier peptide deliver copper, magnesium, and other trace elements which aid wound repair and enzymatic processes.  These peptides are also called "penetrating peptides" and "membrane transduction peptides."  The trace elements they deliver improve collagen synthesis, skin elsticity and skin appearance, resulting in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Neurotransmitter Inhibitors

Neurotransmitter inhibitor peptides inhibit the release of acetylcholine through a variety of interactions.  By inhibiting the release of the neurotransmitter, these peptides attenuate the contraction of facial muscles causing wrinkles to relax.  Some types of wrinkles may be reduced by appoximately 30%.  One example of a neurotransmitter inhibiting peptide utilized in cosmetics is Argreline which inhibits synthesis of the SNARE receptor.

Enzyme Inhibitors

ACE inhibitor peptides relax blood vessels and can increase lymphatic drainage.  In cosmetic formulations, they may reduce the accumulation of fluid and releave puffiness, as under the eyes.
