Resins - Polystyrene Core
Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS) is conducted on functionalized solid supports. Resin beads have become, by far, the most widely used support.
Resin beads are spheres composed of polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzene. This composition allows them to swell in a variety of organic solvents including dichloromethane (DCM), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), Tetrahydrofuran (THF), N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), and countless others. Ordinarily, polystyrene core resins do not swell in water, methanol, ether, or similarly polar solvents.
Beads are separated by mesh size. Choosing the right size for parallel synthesis is usually based on the porosity of your filter. 100-200 mesh is recommended for use on aapptec equipment.
